Engineering Design Leadership and Responsibility
Question: Discuss about the Engineering Design for Leadership and Responsibility. Answer: Introduction: The Manager from Technocrat - a philosophical journey presents a picture which differentiates the work of a manager from a technocrat. The manager manages their subordinates towards common goals using their managerial competencies and leadership qualities. The technocrats lead the organisations using their technological knowledge and skills. The governing bodies of the technocrat companies are people like technologists, scientists and other technical experts. The picture described infers polarisation and make the two groups look different from each other and they can coexist. Technocrats stress more on digitalisation and technological advancement instead of process development. The managers stress more on process transformation like allocation of resources, motivation and so on. The technocrats and managers have different approaches towards management and leadership of organisations. However, they can come together to find out sustainable and economical solution to problem like carbo n sequestration. One common feature between the managers and technocrats is that they lead the teams, only their method and perspective differ as explained (Seetahal Alexander, 2014). The tape dispenser shows how the understanding of the viewers can vary when they try to interpret it in brief. The classical theorists breakdown the tape dispenser into individual parts which makes understanding of the machine easier. The theory shows that complex processes become easier in application if broken down into components (Pahl Beitz, 2013). An interpretation and review of the shows deep understanding of author on human life aspects like romance, religion, quality of life and so on. The author also portrays romance having a living identity and gender. The author has used the parts as examples, he has referred to the various parts of human life like science, arts and religion. He also pointed out that motivation and dedication towards work is like a form of religious worship which bring about elevation in the quality of life (Mathur, 2016). Posner delves into the quantitative and qualitative aspects of a good manager. He studied project managers and asked them two open ended questions. The two questions tried to explore the qualities and the challenges faced by the managers respectively. Posner did not get sufficient data to support his research and come out with concrete finding. The author also seemed to put forward his own opinion instead of a neutral survey based findings (Posner, 2014). South explained the methods of SECWAs reengineering and studying of imported machine parts and the consequent saving of money. The imported parts were of superior quality and economical price which reduced the time required to process the parts. The author was more concerned about the economic operations than was security of operations. Engineers analyses the problems of the society and tries to solve them using technology. Managers are people who lead their teams towards achievement of goals while avoiding conflict and maintaining coordination. The managers should have the quality of utilising the available resources and increase their efficiency. The present scenarios often require the engineers to have managerial skills of tackling challenges like managing people and meeting deadlines. They engineers lead different departments related to technology and innovation where they manage people. Technology is integral part of their departments but cannot deal with situations like deadline miss and conflict. The engineers as a result need to have managerial skills to me able to lead their teams towards their goals and avoid conflicts. There are many qualities which a good leader should possess and the most important of them all is communication skills. The engineers lead their departments, like the engineering departments and need to lead teams. They should communicate information and empower their teams to perform the responsibilities efficiently. Smooth communication lead to execution of responsibilities more effectively and efficiently. It is very important because in engineering departments functions are interdependent and interlinked. Poor communication will lead to conflict and affect performances. Thus, proper communication skills are indispensible qualities of an engineer and help them to motivate and direct their subordinates. Thus, communication skills help engineers to ensure high productivity of their departments. References: Mathur, R. (2016). Book Review: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Pahl, G., Beitz, W.
